Anthropic's free year of Claude Opus 4.6 for verified US K-12 teachers, and the question it raises for any industry watching which AI tools become the default before anyone has to pay for them.
Anthropic is giving every US K-12 teacher a free year of its top AI model, no strings beyond a school email.
Every verified K-12 teacher in the US can now get a full year of Claude, Anthropic’s top model, at no cost.
The program is called Claude for Teachers. Sign up before June 30, 2027 with a school email address and you get Claude Opus 4.6, unlimited Projects for holding context across a semester, and a Learning Commons library mapped to academic standards in all 50 states, down to the specific skills under each standard and the order kids usually learn them. Training on student data is off by default, and Anthropic built in FERPA aligned terms with a set timeline for deleting conversations that touch student information.
I keep thinking about the “sign up by June 30, 2027” line. That is not a short trial window. Anthropic is willing to run this free a year to get Claude into how teachers plan lessons and grade work.
Anthropic is not testing whether teachers will use an AI assistant. It is betting on which one becomes the default before anyone has to pay for it.
This feels a lot like what Google did with Chromebooks in schools. They are now the default for the majority of our schools.
