This is probably what the '70's felt like.
The 1970s muscle car era ran on cheap gas until fuel economy rules forced a reckoning, and the same question is now facing AI data centers and every industrial operator sharing their grid.
Right now feels a lot like the 1970’s, or what I imagine they felt like.
Big engines, cheap gas, and no one checking the mileage. We drove gas guzzlers happily until the oil crisis and the 1975 CAFE standards made Detroit finally care about fuel economy.
AI is in its muscle car years. Data centers pull power like it’s free, and no one is holding them to an efficiency number, because none exists yet. The compute is cheap and the electric bill gets treated as someone else’s problem.
Eventually a mileage standard shows up for AI power.
Instead of AI companies training their models to be better, why not have them focus their efforts on making data centers more efficient to run their own models?
Even Google abandoned their own sustainability goals due to running AI.
